3 Minutes course in Management

March 6th, 2008

Lesson 1

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour.  Before she says a word, Bob says, ‘I’ll give you 800 to drop that towel.’  After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob. After a few seconds, Bob hands her 800 and leaves.

The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.  When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, ‘Who was that?’ ‘It was Bob the next door neighbour,’ she replies. ‘Great!’ the husband says, ‘did he say anything about the 800 he owes me?’

Moral of the story:
If you share critical information pertaining to credit
and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in
a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2

A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident.  After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg.  The nun said, ‘Father, remember Psalm 129?’  The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, ‘Father, remember Psalm 129?’ The priest apologised ‘Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.’ Arriving at the convent, the nun went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129.
It said, ‘Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.’

Moral of the story:
If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 3

A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.  They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says, ‘I’ll give each of you just one wish.’ Me first! Me first!’ says the admin clerk. ‘I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.’ Puff!  She’s gone.  Me next! Me next!’ says the sales rep. ‘I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.’ Puff!  He’s gone.

‘OK, you’re up,’ the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, ‘I want those two back in the office after lunch.’

Moral of the story:
Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 4

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, ‘Can I also sit like you and do nothing?’ The eagle answered: ‘Sure, why not.’  So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested.  All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story:
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 5

A turkey was chatting with a bull. ‘I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,’ sighed the turkey, ‘but I haven’t got the energy.’  ’Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?’ replied the bull.  They’re packed with nutrients.’  The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree.  He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:
BullShit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

Lesson 6

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field.  While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him.
As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out!

He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.  A passing cat heard the bird d singing and came to investigate.  Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of the story:
(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy
(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend
(3) And when you’re in deep shit, it’s best to keep your mouth shut!

This ends the 3-minute management course.

Impreza Subaru Impreza WRX hatchback vs Mitsuhishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart

March 1st, 2008

imoprcopy.jpg

Impreza vs Lancer; a battle that has been fought on rally stages, dealerships even in internet forums is about to get even worse as Mitsubishi is preparing to launch an attack on the Subaru Impreza WRX hatch. Of course we’re talking about the production version of the “Prototype-S” that was officially unveiled today –see.

The “Prototype-S” will bear the moniker Lancer Sportback Ralliart when it goes into production during the second half of the year. Mitsubishi’s hatchback is powered by a de-tuned version of the EVO X’s 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engine delivering 240 HP and it also gets the same advanced AWD system as the top Lancer. Its AWD Subaru counterpart is equipped with a 224 HP 4-cylinder, turbocharged boxer engine.

There’s no way of knowing which car is better until we get the chance to drive both of them, but it would be interesting to hear your initial thoughts after seeing what Mitsubishi is preparing to offer.

4 Steps to a Stronger You

February 29th, 2008

Are you doing the kind of exercise that builds robust bones? Research says maybe not.By Megan Othersen Gorman, Prevention

If you take a walk every day to help you slash your risk of developing osteoporosis, the bone-thinning disease that affects 8 million women, you’re on the right track. But new studies suggest that unless you put a lot more power in your step, it might not be enough to keep your skeleton strong. These four science-based strategies will ensure that you’ll have the healthiest, hardiest bones possible.

Prevent Hip Fracture: Jump

Jumping 70 to 100 times a day, 3 days a week, can increase bone mass by 1 to 4% in women over a period of 1 to 2 years, depending on age. (If you’re past menopause, it’s harder to build bone, so it takes longer.)

Why it helps: Your body is pretty smart about taking care of itself. When you jump, your bones send the message that you need a sturdier foundation. The signal they give off attracts minerals such as calcium to lay down the matrix for building bigger, stronger bones.

You don’t have to jump 100 times in a row, says researcher Kathy Gunter, PhD, of the Bone Research Laboratory at Oregon State University. Instead, jump as high as you can 10 to 15 times, 3 times a day. The higher you jump, the stronger the bone-strengthening message.

Caution: Before starting your great leap forward, add squats and lunges to your fitness regimen for a couple of months to prepare your muscles to handle the impact. Do two sets of 8 to 12 reps of each exercise 2 to 3 times per week. If you already have osteoporosis, ask your doc if it’s safe for you to jump.

Get Strong All Over: Strength-Train

Go for more weight and fewer reps, says Gunter. “If you want to stimulate bone growth, strength-train at 60 to 80% of your max. In other words, use weights you can lift 12 times and not a single time more, 2 or 3 times a week.”

Why it helps: Studies have found that more moderate-intensity weight lifting doesn’t exert enough force to stimulate bone growth — you need heavier weights.

Caution: Consult a trainer or other expert who can show you the correct way to lift weights to avoid strains, sprains, and other injuries.

Build a Better Back: Row

Add a rowing machine to your regular exercise routine, which may strengthen your back muscles and help increase spinal bone density.

Why it helps: A recent study found that postmenopausal women who did rowing exercises had 4.5% greater bone density of the spine and more than 20% more muscle strength in their backs than nonrowing peers. “The greater your back strength, the lower your risk of fractures,” says Gunter. And there’s a bonus: Stronger back muscles mean less back pain.

Caution: To avoid injury, don’t pull with your back. Push with your legs and pull with your arms simultaneously. Some back problems can be aggravated by the rowing motion. Speak with your doctor before adding this exercise to your regimen.

Strengthen Your Spine: Step Lively

Walk vigorously with your arms swinging forcefully and body swaying naturally side to side.

Why it helps: When you walk briskly with arm action and a twisting motion, the muscles of your torso tug on the bones of your spine. Although it’s a different kind of stress than you exert when you jump, it also helps jolt bones so they start bulking up.

Caution: To avoid injury, start slowly. Stride vigorously for 5 minutes and then walk comfortably for 5 minutes. Repeat three to six times. This is more than just a safety measure: Studies show that you build more bone by alternating short bursts of intensity with easy recovery periods.
